A group of scholars interpreting the Torah are working on a difficult passage. All but one of them believes it means "X" yet one firmly believes it means "Y".
One of the group says to him, "What if God really meant X and to show this to us, he sent a cloud to cover us in shadow for a moment?"
Just then, a cloud crosses the sun, leaving them in shadow for a moment. Yet the one says, "I still believe it means Y".
Another of the group says to him, "What if God really meant X and to show this to us, he sent a bird to fly through the window, land on the table and fly away?"
Just then, a bird flies through the window, lands on the table and flies away. Yet the one says, "I still believe it means Y".
Another of the group says to him, "What if God really meant X and to show this to us, a voice boomed out of the heavens saying, 'I meant X!'"
Just then, a voice booms out of the heavens saying, "I meant X!". The one says, "God provided us this text and endowed us with reason and intellect to understand it. I understand it to mean Y, and to accept otherwise on faith is to betray the reason and intellect with which God endowed me."
